Terminology Work

Good Afternoon!

I hope you are all well and enjoyed your break from college (but still managed to do some study!)

This lesson we are going to focus on using the correct terminology for analysis using a couple of extracts from A Streetcar Named Desire and The Kite Runner.

Read through both extracts and identify as many language features as you can.  Go through the frameworks as systematically as you can. Although you don't need it for ELLA 1, you could also identify representations of speech. We are simply looking at terminology for the moment! Use each other, use your notes and me to check understanding of the terminology you need.

Next, using these extracts as starting points, make a note of what themes and ideas about the characters and their relationships are presented in the extracts. You are not analysing the extracts, simply using quotations to jog your memory about the main ideas from the texts and making links to different parts of the play or novel.

Extension:

When you have done that, look at the example questions for ELLA 1. Plan a response to Question 5 (an analytical task on Streetcar). This can be completed for homework. We will look at a couple of exemplar responses to this task next lesson.

NB. Your mock exam will be on ELLA 2 Representations of Speech and not ELLA 1.

WW1 Language

Here is a great article on language used and developed during WW1. Can you find any examples in Strange Meeting?

Half Term Homework Task

The aim of this task is to get you as familiar as you can with Part One of the novel Strange Meeting. The exam question will always ask you to explore the representations of speech from a short extract of the novel and then you have to refer to another extract yourself...therefore, you need to be as familiar as you can with key passages that revolve around dialogue.

Complete the table attached here.

Dialogue Task

You will need to download it in order to work on it. Find page references and sections that you could refer to for each character in Part One, giving a brief summary of what is happening and some key language features used. You must show me this after half term but ultimately this a useful reference tool for you!

You also need to continue with your work on Garrett. You must come to the first lesson back prepared to discuss a range of comments about the extract you have been given and we will work on a model response together.

You could have a full response prepared and you can see how yours compares. This would be extremely useful and you would really learn how to improve on your analysis of speech and other language issues.

Good Luck
